Improve Your Habits, Improve Your Health

Better health is on everyone’s mind. Nevertheless, it can be difficult to get on the right track. We often set expectations too high and if we do not accomplish our goals we feel defeated. Setting smaller, realistic goals to improve our health will help us achieve the bigger picture in the long run.

Consider your daily habits. Are there any you feel you could improve upon that could lead to better health and wellness? Acknowledging these habits and taking small steps to work on them will allow you to establish a new, healthy pattern. From the minute you wake up, your actions have an effect on your energy, your mood, and your health. Whether it’s drinking enough water throughout the day or maintaining proper posture, we have created a list of habits you can form to improve our overall health and wellness.

While they may seem small individually, these habits have a big overall effect that will continue to improve your health down the road.  And remember, a general rule is that it takes about 21 days to form a new habit. Consistency and patience is key to long-term health.

  • Massage and stretching: Ease muscle tension, improve circulation, flexibility, and overall relief by incorporating massage and stretching into your routine. In as little as 10-15 minutes a day, you can reap the many benefits of these practices.
  • Tech screens: It is no secret that today’s society is constantly attached to screens; TVs, tablets and smartphones are at every touchpoint. By using ergonomically designed mounts, such as a Monitor Arm or by simply bringing our phones to eye-level, eye strain, muscle fatigue, and the risk of pinched nerves or back pain is minimized.
  • Maintain posture: Proper posture can prevent neck and back pain, headaches, and muscle fatigue. This How-To Guide for Perfect Posture will help you sit or stand properly no matter where you are.
  • Hydrate: Carry a 16 to 20 oz bottle of water with you wherever you go. It is easier to remember to drink water if you always have some nearby. If you have trouble getting enough water, use timers on your phone or the internet to get through at least half of your body weight in ounces of water a day.
  • Exercise, daily: 30 minutes a day is all it takes to be on your way to better health. Sign up for a favorite workout class, walk 15 minutes away from your house in the morning and then back, set scheduled workout times in your calendar, or find a friend who can be your accountability partner. Workouts do not have to be intense to be effective if you’re starting to get back into a routine. You can work up to longer, more concentrated exercises.
  • Sleep more: Aim to get at least 7 hours of shut-eye each night. Come see our sleep experts if you are having difficulty sleeping. We can provide sleep solutions to keep you comfortable and supported throughout the night.

As EveryBody Deserves a Massage week kicks off on July 10th, we wanted to take a deeper look into the benefits of massage therapy.

These are just a few of the many ways massage therapy can improve your overall health and quality of life:

  1. Reduce stress and anxiety: Lowering stress levels can have a positive impact on your health and wellness. Through massage therapy, stress hormones are reduced, blood pressure is lowered, and levels of serotonin and dopamine, which help reduce depression, are increased.
  2. Pain management: By relaxing tense muscles, massage chairs and massage productss can alleviate back, neck, and all around muscle pain. Massage therapy can also be just as or more effective than medication and acupuncture treatments.
  3. Better sleep: Getting enough sleep is crucial to your health. Massage therapy helps to reduce pain and stress hormones while improving your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.
  4. Relieve headaches: Did you know 45 million Americans suffer from chronic migraines and headaches? Not only can massage therapy help ease the pressure and pain of headaches but regular massages can also reduce the frequency and chance of getting a headache.
  5. Increase range of motion and flexibility: Massage therapy works on connective tissues, muscles, ligaments, and joints. This improves blood flow and keeps joints more fluid to improve flexibility while reducing the risk of injury.

Here are our favorite types of massage products:

Choosing A Massage Chair

Living room

Studies continue to show the positive effects massage therapy has on one’s health. Getting massages regularly can greatly improve your mental, physical, and emotional wellness. With our line of massage chairs, a therapeutic massage can take place any time of day, for any amount of time, in the privacy of your own home.

Massage therapy benefits

Massage therapy can be beneficial to all; especially those who are experiencing pain and discomfort throughout the day. Along with reducing soreness and aiding in relaxation, massages help:

  • Reduce the amount of tension headaches and migraines by allowing the body to maintain a level of relaxation and stress-relief.
  • Improve circulation due to oxygen and nutrients being kneaded through soft tissues and vital organs.
  • Stretch tight or weak muscles.
  • Reduce and ease back pain through improved flexibility and range of motion.
  • Improved sleep quality.
  • Decrease the stress hormone, cortisol, while increasing the feel-good hormones, dopamine and serotonin, resulting in less stress, depression, and anxiety.
  • Manage and reduce chronic pain naturally to improve quality of life.

Choosing a massage chair

When it comes to massage and other comfort-related products, choosing a massage chair should come down to personal preference. We recommend visiting your local Relax The Back store to test out different styles of massage chairs. Our trained specialists can help you find the perfect chair for your specific needs.

When choosing your massage chair, here are some general guidelines to follow:

  • Comfort level of chair: Some massage chairs have certain contours or shapes that will fit a particular body shape or need. Sit down in different types of chairs to find one that works with your body and specific needs.
  • Strength of massage: The strength and type of massage varies from model to model. Let our specialists know which type of massages you prefer – are you are looking for a softer massage with targeted relief areas or a more intense, vigorous massage? Perhaps you enjoy heated massages? The DreamWave Massage Chair by Inada, for instance, features a heated seat and offers a Shiatsu style massage whereas the Zen 3D Massage Chair by Relax The Back includes 5 massage programs ranging from Swedish, to Shiatsu, to Air massage.
  • Personalization and presets of a chair: As noted above, some massage chairs come with preset massage programs. Take time to experience these preset programs and settings when testing out each chair. Some chairs offer more variability, which works well for a chair that will have multiple users.
  • Additional features and accessories: Certain massage chairs allow you to recline to zero-gravity, such as the Human Touch ZeroG 4.0. Some chairs include a foot and calf massager, which also acts as an extended leg rest. The Ultimate Smart Chair by Relax The Back comes with a tablet to customize user profiles, a USB port and speakers with Bluetooth capacity for listening to music or watching movies. Look into all options available to you when choosing your massage chair.
  • Appearance: There are many fabric and material combinations to choose from as well as shapes and sizes and prices to fit your budget of massage chairs.

Massage Away Pain With The Theracane

Self-massage tools, like one of our top selling products the Theracane, are a cost effective way to find relief from muscle tension, stiffness, soreness, and pain. For those who suffer from chronic pain, are recovering from muscle surgeries or nagging injuries from the past, this low cost massage tool is an great way to manage and relieve pain.

Trigger Point Relief

Injury, muscle overuse, slouching, or trauma can cause trigger points (also know as knots). These trigger points are contracted muscle fibers that can cause stiffness and aches. Oftentimes, trigger points can lead to low back and neck pain. It is thought that these small patches of contracted muscle fibers “block some of the normal blood flow to the affected tissue,” said Jan Dommerholt, a physical therapist in Bethesda, Md., who studies and treats muscle knots, leading to pain and discomfort.

Many of these trigger points, or knots, are treatable with self-massage. With the Theracane, you are able to apply pressure directly to the knot to help release tension and increase blood flow to the surrounding muscle tissue, thus relieving pain and relaxing the muscles.

How to use a Theracane

The unique design allows you to effectively work out knots and relieve pain and sore muscles, making it the perfect full-body self-massage tool. The Theracane allows you to massage those hard to reach spots that may otherwise only find relief with the help of a massage therapist. Reach pressure points in your neck, upper and lower back, shoulders, ribs, arms, and legs.

We’ve created these helpful images to show you different Theracane techniques. If you’ve never used a Theracane or if you’re looking for new ways to melt away knots, these images can help you find relief.

Five Healthy Ways to Spend Your Tax Return

If you’re expecting a check in the mail this year from Uncle Sam, here are our top five tips for making the most of your hard-earned tax return

  1. Invest in Fitness – One way to long-term wealth is long-term health. By getting fit and healthy now, you can save a fortune in medical bills later. Consider using your refund for a gym membership or appointments with a physical therapist. There’s something for everyone in the wellness industry including programs to help you stop smoking, reduce stress, lose weight, etc. If back pain health is your focus, we have products to get you back to feeling your best, whether it’s to relieve tired/injured muscles or to increase strength.
  2. Invest in sleep – Another overlooked way to improve your health is to invest in sleep. Many health problems can be improved with a good night’s rest as sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more. If you’re not getting the recommended 8 hours every night, you risk (among other things):
      1. Increase stroke risk
      2. Weight gain
      3. Memory loss
      4. Bone damage
      5. Increased heart disease risk

We take a whole body approach to improving the quality of your sleep, so come visit a store to talk to a trained associate. You might be surprised that your “old mattress” may not be the problem.

  3. Invest in your diet – A change to healthier eating also includes learning about balance, variety, and moderation. Rather than dieting (a temporary fix), healthy eating means making changes that become life-long habits. It can help you get the right balance of nutrients and have you feeling and looking your best. Your diet is also a key in preventing and controlling heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.
  4. Treat yourself to a massage – Reduce stress and painful aches of a long day with a massage. There’s an option for any price point – from portable, travel-size massage products to a luxurious, 3D massage chair – for all members of the family. Melt away the stress of the pre-tax season by opting for a relaxing, therapeutic experience that comes with many health benefits.
  5. Invest in memories –  They say money can’t buy happiness but you can get close. Reserve your refund for experiences (not material objects) that give you more bang for your buck. For example, a getaway trip with loved ones or a cooking class can lead to increased happiness/health with fond memories. They keep giving long after, unlike a new wardrobe piece purchase.

How will you be spending (or saving) your tax refund this year?

Foam Rollers for Back Pain Relief

An increasingly popular fitness tool, Exercise and Therapy Foam Rollers are lightweight, cylindrical pieces of dense foam, but don’t let their resemblance to pool noodles fool you. They’re used as a simple, yet highly effective self-massage technique that offer many of the same benefits as a traditional deep-tissue massage without the steep price tag. Foam rolling works based on self-myofascial release. Fascia is a fibrous, connective tissue that binds your muscles, bones, nerves and joints. Over time or after injuries, your fascia form soft tissue adhesions, which can cause trigger points and tightness. The best way to attack these tight knots is direct pressure. Amassage therapist can apply the right amount of pressure to relieve these knots but a foam roller is the next best alternative. It’s always available and one purchase covers all sessions!

You can use foam rollers before and after exercise or whenever necessary. Simply position the area or tender spot you’d like to massage on the foam roller, and let your body weight do all the work by rolling back and forth while using arms or legs to support the body.

Foam rolling should be an important part of your day, whether you’re a serious athlete or a physical therapy patient.

If you’re wondering whether you stand to benefit from foam rollers, they help with the following:

  • Pain relief: Foam rollers work to release myofascia adhesions that cause muscle pain and soreness.
  • Flexibility: Stretching and massaging will improve the flexibility of surrounding lower back muscles, reducing lower back pain. Flexibility also increases your range of motion, ensuring good posture, balance and normal movement.
  • Prevention of further injury: Tight muscles can lead to injuries during exercise or other physical activities. By massaging away fascia buildup, foam rollers prevent your muscles from becoming injury trigger points
  • Stress relief: Applying pressure on knots releases built-up tension and helps loosen your muscles. If you’ve been sitting all day at the office or are stressed, foam roll the tension away.

Our Exercise and Therapy Foam Rollers come in five sizes, including full and half round shapes. Versatile, affordable, and easy-to-use, they’re one of our most popular products.
